A little clarity
for your next batch.

Practical estimates with visible assumptions. Change the example values to match your own project.

The workbench

Approximate alcohol

Use original and final specific gravity from a hydrometer.

Method & limitations

(Original SG − final SG) × 131.25. Follow your hydrometer’s calibration and temperature instructions. Not for uncorrected refractometer readings, fortified wine, or batches with later sugar or water additions. This estimate does not establish fermentation completion or bottling safety. Manufacturer method (PDF).

The workbench

Plan your bottles

Estimate full bottles from volume, size and expected losses.

Method & limitations

Usable mL = liters × 1,000 × (1 − loss% ÷ 100). Full bottles are rounded down. Bottles to prepare are rounded up to allow for the remainder. If your entered volume already excludes losses, use 0% here. This tool does not assess wine stability.

The workbench

Vineyard density

Explore the approximate number of vines for a usable planting area.

Method & limitations

Floor of usable area ÷ (row spacing × vine spacing). Subtract paths, headlands and setbacks before entering area. This is a density estimate, not a row layout or yield prediction. Plot shape, cultivar vigor and equipment affect the final plan. The example spacing is not a growing recommendation.

The workbench

Convert your units

Keep the units clear from vineyard notes to cellar records.

Method & limitations

1 US liquid gallon = 3.785411784 L; 1 Imperial gallon = 4.54609 L; 1 pound = 0.45359237 kg; 1 foot = 0.3048 m. °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. NIST conversion reference.
